OpenAI's Fidji Simo steps down to focus on health, transitions to advisory role
Fidji Simo, OpenAI's product and business chief, is stepping down to prioritize her health after a serious illness. She will take on a part-time advisory role following her medical leave, during which Greg Brockman managed product responsibilities.
Fidji Simo announced her resignation from OpenAI to focus on recovery from Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), which she has been managing since 2019.
Simo has been on medical leave since April, and Greg Brockman has been overseeing product responsibilities in her absence.
She will transition to a part-time advisory role at OpenAI, where she was hired in May 2025 to lead the applications business.
OpenAI recently filed for an IPO, but has not provided a timeline for going public, reportedly delaying plans until at least next year.
Before joining OpenAI, Simo was CEO of Instacart and held various leadership roles at Meta, including head of Facebook from 2019 to 2021.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed gratitude for Simo's contributions and friendship.
